The Date is Tuesday, Jan 27, 2026

Miami Men’s Basketball plays UMASS in the first every game at The Coach Cady arena at the Goggin Ice center. The place is packed to capacity at close to four thousand!

The lights are dark, The DJ is getting the crowd fired up, the beer is flowing, and the crowd erupts as the lights and lasers bring the team out.  It would be an event never experienced by Miami students who are subjected to one of the worst venues in America to witness a college basketball game, Millet Hall.

10 years ago, we broached the idea of Goggin to be used for basketball to a former Miami president. Our suggestion was in the context of our push to blow up Millet and create excitement around sports as an integral part of the Miami Experience.  However, elevating sports was simply not a priority at the time.

Today, there is finally movement on a new basketball arena. However, the process will take years and there is an opportunity now to create excitement around basketball!

Coach Steele has brought in new excitement for men’s basketball not seen in decades.  We are lucky to have someone who cares so much about elevating Miami Men’s basketball and giving students a great experience and product.  He had similar thoughts about utilizing Goggin Ice Center over the past couple of years but presumably competing agendas and red tape rendered the effort unsuccessful. In fact, the idea has been broached by others from time to time as well.

A new arena will be a fabulous addition, but we must live with reality.  Even with approval which has not been finalized, the timeline to build a new arena will take years. There is an immediate solution right in front of our eyes to create a great experience for students while that process plays out: The Cady Arena at Goggin Ice Center!

The Cady Arena Checks every box:

  1. The capacity of close to four thousand is perfect to create a high energy experience in an intimate setting.
  2. The location is in the heart of campus.
  3. The conversion can be immediate as there are countless examples of arenas, including OSU, that house both hockey and basketball.

Yes, there will be instances where basketball games will still be played at Millet.  However, there is an immediate opportunity to have games a Goggin which will create such a unique, fun, high energy experience for the students.

If Miami is serious about elevating sports, then they will do what is needed to test this idea on Jan 27, 2026, when Miami OH plays UMASS!!  It is then up to the best students in the country to prove that if Miami makes the effort to create an incredible event you will show up and be part of making Jan 27, 2026, the start of a new era!! The time is now to show that Miami is serious about the role of sports to the college experience.

The Cady Arena at Goggin Ice Center will become the signature location for what sports can mean to The Miami Experience.  We are convinced that the new hockey coach Anthony Noreen will bring Miami Men’s hockey, our first National Championship.  He just had the top five recruiting class and with the right resources Hockey will absolutely return to being synonymous with Miami.

We hope that students and alumni will push Miami to make this move now!!  The potential is unlimited, and an immediate solution is right in front of our eyes! Let us make it happen! We already have the best college experience in the country.  Let us take it to the next level!
